Ibadan Airport Manager Leads Staff, Stakeholders in 2026 Safety Week Activities

The management of Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport (SLAA), Ibadan, has commenced activities marking the 2026 Safety Week with a sensitisation and safety walk aimed at reinforcing safety consciousness and ensuring a safe operating environment within the airport.

The Airport Manager, Mr. Gbenga Afuwape, led members of staff and key airport stakeholders on the safety walk around the airport premises as part of activities designed to identify and eliminate potential safety hazards, particularly Foreign Object Debris (FOD).

The exercise involved a thorough inspection of designated areas within the airport environment to ensure that objects capable of posing a threat to aircraft operations, personnel, equipment and passengers were identified and removed.

Foreign Object Debris, commonly referred to as FOD, can constitute a significant safety risk in aviation, particularly when such objects find their way onto the movement area or runway. The presence of FOD can cause damage to aircraft engines, tyres and other critical components, as well as create hazards for airport personnel and ground-handling operations.

Speaking during the exercise, the Airport Manager stressed the importance of collective responsibility in maintaining safety standards at the airport, noting that aviation safety requires the commitment and vigilance of every individual working within the airport ecosystem.

He urged members of staff, airlines, ground handlers, security personnel, contractors and other stakeholders to remain vigilant and promptly report any safety concerns or foreign objects noticed within operational areas.

The 2026 Safety Week programme was organised by the Head of Safety Department, Mrs. Hazmat Adeola Shukurah, with the objective of further strengthening the airport’s safety culture and promoting greater awareness of safe practices among staff and stakeholders.

The Safety Week activities also provide an opportunity for personnel to reflect on existing safety procedures, identify areas requiring improvement and reinforce compliance with established aviation safety standards.

The management of Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport reiterated its commitment to maintaining a safe, secure and efficient environment for passengers, airlines, staff and other airport users.

The airport authorities further emphasised that safety remains a shared responsibility and called on all stakeholders to continue to uphold the highest standards of safety in the discharge of their respective duties.
